Editorial – Europe and its next-generation scientists

Looking around, it is easy to see how many learned societies and nations are trying to do something to promote the next generation of scientists. In the era of digitisation and social networks most of these initiatives are aimed to give to young researchers the opportunity to create their own network of connections.
If we look at the past, the big differences between a scientist of the current generation and one of the eighties can be synthesised in a few points: the digitisation of scientific discoveries in electronic journals and their diffusion through the Internet allow us to read and publish articles in shorter time. The Executive Committee of the European Physical society met in Mulhouse, France, on 24 June 2014. This was the first meeting after the elections at Council. In addition to appointing officers, the Executive Committee discussed better communication with Member Societies and Divisions and Groups. Each Member of the Executive Committee acts as a privileged contact to a set of Member Societies and Divisions and Groups.

The European Physical Society [EPS] Prize for Research into the Science of Light is awarded on behalf of the EPS through its Quantum Electronics & Optics Division [QEOD]. A new publication frequency for Europhysics News

In response to the decision at 2014 Council to save production costs and to insure that the magazine remains spread widely in Europe, it was agreed to change the publication frequency of Europhysics News.
In 2014 and 2015, Europhysics News will move from 6 printed issues to 5 printed issues. In this way we hope to satisfy the interests of authors and advertisers and achieve the sustainability of the publication.

The workshop “Widening participation of CEI Countries in the EU Research Programs” – Training and Research in Physics Workshop – was held in Bucharest, Romania, from 25 to 27 May 2014.
