Mulhouse, the city hosting the secretariat of the European Physical Society, has started it activities celebrating the International Year of Light [IYL 2015]. Educational visual arts workshops are being organised through the “Ateliers Pédagogiques d’Arts Plastiques” [APAP]. The team led by Cyrille Saint-Cricq has taken light as the connecting thread for their programme running all through the year.

The Virgo collaboration participates in the International Year of Light

No doubt that 2015 will be a bright year! It is of course the International Year of Light but it will also mark the first light for the gravitational wave detector Advanced Virgo based near Pisa in Italy. Advanced Virgo aims to detect the most violent events in the universe by measuring on Earth extremely small ripples in the fabric of space time itself. The detector is a giant Michelson interferometer made of two perpendicular 3-km long arms spreading along the Tuscan countryside.

First Iran Physics Tournament and International Year of Light 2015

The Ariaian Young Innovative Minds Institute [AYIMI] held the first Iran Physics Tournament in Iran with cooperation of Scientific- Student Society of Shahid Beheshti University in February 2015 and a selected team will participate in the International Physics Tournament 2015 in Poland.

Opening Ceremony in Morocco
On 26 February the Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies [IYL 2015] in Morocco took place in Rabat, at the University of Sciences of Rabat. In addition to the participation of researchers, students, institutional partners and journalists, the main audience of this ceremony was children and teenagers, largely represented by student associations, astronomy clubs and UNESCO’s associated schools, amounting to a total of 300 attendees. – Read the full report on the IYL 2015 website.

From an idea hatched back in 2009, the International Year of Light 2015 has now arrived in full force! What an amazing two days it was in Paris at UNESCO HQ at the Opening Ceremony, where the international scientific community came together with diplomats and politicians, architects and designers, leading companies in light technologies, representatives from the European Commission, artists and performers, students, volunteers and many more.

The International Year of Light in Europe 2015 [LIGHT2015] – funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme – is a high impact EU-wide outreach and education initiative that aims to promote the importance of photonics to young people, entrepreneurs and the general public during the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies [IYL 2015]. The project, coordinated by the European Physical Society [EPS], will leverage the tremendous visibility of IYL 2015 to ensure that the public in all member states of the EU understands and appreciates the importance that photonics has for society.

The Opening Ceremony of the “Année Internationale de la Lumière 2015 en France” (International Year of Light in France 2015) took place in Paris on 8 January 2015 in the lecture hall of the University of Sorbonne under the patronage of France’s President François Hollande.
This prestigious place saw great names of the physics community such as Noble Prize winner Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and Serge Haroche, as well as Alain Aspect from the Académie des Sciences and Gérard Mourou from the Ecole Polytechnique, deliver brilliant presentations.
