Rüdiger Voss is the next EPS President-elect
The European Physical Society [EPS] is pleased to announce that Rüdiger Voss has been elected as the next EPS President-elect. He will take up office as the President of EPS in April 2017, when the term of the current President, Christophe Rossel comes to an end.
Particles are back in the LHC
On Friday, the LHC opened its doors to allow particles to travel around the ring for the first time since the year-end technical stop (YETS) began in December 2015. At 10:30 a.m., a first bunch was circulating and by midday the beam was circulating in both directions. Progress over the weekend has been good and low intensity beam has already been taken to 6.5 TeV and through the squeeze.
Training course for eighteen teachers at CERN
From 8 to 10 December, 18 teachers from all over France attended a three-day training course on matter, organised by the LAMAP Foundation (Fondation La main à la pâte, see here) and hosted by CERN and S’Cool Lab.
A drone flight over ESO’s experimental sites in Chile
Paola Catapano, a member of CERN’s Communication Group, and Mike Struik, a member of the CERN TE Department, were invited to visit ESO’s experimental sites – the ALMA observatory and the Very Large Telescope in Paranal, Chile. Enjoy some of the beautiful images they sent to the Bulletin.
Can Future Energy needs be met sustainably?
Global energy use is increasing rapidly, driven by rising living standards in developing countries. Although the percentage of primary energy provided by burning fossil fuels is falling slowly from its current value of some 80%, their contribution is rising in absolute terms and is expected to increase by around 25% by 2035. This is bad news given the need to decarbonise (to reduce air pollution as well as to moderate climate change): is it inevitable?
SESAME moves towards commissioning
Report on the 26th SESAME Council meeting held on 26-27 May 2015 and hosted by UNESCO in Paris. In order for commissioning to start in mid-2016, and for the first stage of Phase 1 to be completed in 2017, some additional capital funding is still needed. Egypt will join Iran, Israel, Jordan, and Turkey (which are each providing $5 million) in making a voluntary contribution, which will partly fill the gap.
The Council was updated on progress in fabricating the magnets for the main storage ring, which is being managed by CERN, in collaboration with SESAME, using funds provided by the European Union…
CERN and the International Year of Light: exploring light as luminosity
One hundred years after the publication of Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity, the UN General Assembly declared 2015 the International Year of Light and light-based technologies. Around the world, the year is being celebrated with programmes and events showcasing light as the source of life, peace and science. CERN has been joining in the festivities; with events showcasing “light as luminosity” in its High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrade project as well as its involvement in the SESAME synchrotron project in Jordan.
A flying start for CERN in H2020
Following successful participation in a string of some 90 projects within FP7, CERN is actively involved in Horizon 2020. In 2014, nearly 60 proposals involving CERN’s participation were submitted to various H2020 sub-programmes and the hope is that many more will follow in 2015.
CERN Council selects Fabiola Gianotti as next Director-General
At its 173rd Closed Session on 4 November in Geneva, CERN Council selected the Italian physicist, Dr Fabiola Gianotti, as the Organization’s next Director-General. The appointment will be formalised at the December session of Council, and Dr Gianotti’s mandate will begin on 1 January 2016 and run for a period of five years. Council rapidly converged in favour of Dr Gianotti.

UNOSAT joins the fight against Ebola
Hosted at CERN, UNITAR’s UNOSAT programme examines global satellite imagery for humanitarian use. Whether providing maps for disaster response teams or assessing conflict damage to help reconstruction, the detailed reports provided by the satellites are vital tools for aid workers. But how can satellite imagery help during a health crisis like the Ebola outbreak?
CERN – Colloquium in Honour of Herwig Schopper
This year CERN celebrated its 60 years anniversary under the slogan “science for peace”. Among the many events organized by a number of CERN Member States, there were scientific colloquia also at CERN organized throughout the year. One colloquium, covering the history of the LEP era and held during the September meeting of the CERN Scientific Policy Committee was dedicated to Herwig Schopper, who celebrated his 90th birthday this year.
Herwig Schopper, former President of the EPS (1994 to 1996) and Director General of CERN from 1981 to 1988, had indeed helped to open up CERN during LEP times for a growing scientific community from all over the world…
