On 30 April 1993, CERN made the technology behind the World Wide Web available for everyone to use. From that day on, the web has changed all aspects of society, a revolution that can be compared to the invention of the printing-press in the 15th century. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the free, open web, CERN has started a project to preserve the digital assets that are associated with the birth of the web.

The Institute of High Energy Physics [IHEP] under the auspices of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, celebrated its 40th birthday on 1 February 2013. I was speaking with a colleague recently, and we were reminiscing over my first Council meeting in Leiden (NL) in 1998. That’s when it dawned on me that I have been working for the EPS for fifteen years.

As can be expected, many things have changed. In 1997, the European Union had 15 Member Countries and the EPS had 37 Member Societies. The EU now has 27, and the EPS has 41, respectively.
