A new prize for Research in Laser Science and Applications has been launched by the Quantum Electronics & Optics Division [QEOD] of the European Physical Society [EPS]. The award – which is to be given biennially – will recognise recent excellent research, by up to three individuals, in the field of laser science and its application.

The award will be presented to its winner(s) during a prize ceremony at the 6th EPS Europhoton Conference on “Solid-State, Fibre and Waveguide Coherent Light Sources”, which is to be held in 2014. The prize will consist of an engraved glass medal, a certificate and 2,000 euros in prize money

Nominations should consist of the nominees’ CV, publication list, a two-page summary detailing the significance of the relevant work, a suggested citation and up to four letters of support

Relevant subjects for nomination include laser source development, material science, nonlinear optics, power-scaling concepts, pump source development, spectroscopic and characterisation techniques, ultrafast sources, and applications in optics, photonics and wider fields. In addition, the research should have its origin in, or significant component from, Europe.

The deadline for nominations will be in January 2013. For more information, please visit the QEOD website.

Nominations open for Flerov Prize for nuclear physics

Nominations are now open for the 2013 G.N. Flerov Prize. The commendation is to be given to individuals in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of nuclear physics. The award - which is sponsored by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research [JINR] - was established in 1992 in memory of Georgy Nikolaevich Flerov, the Russian nuclear physicist after whom the 114th chemical element, Flerovium, and the JINR Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions - in which it was discovered - have been named. The prize will be presented on the occasion of Flerov’s 100th birthday anniversary on 2 March 2013...
