EPS launches new science of light research prize

A new prize for Research into the Science of Light has been launched by the Quantum Electronics & Optics Division [QEOD] of the European Physical Society [EPS]. The award – which is to be given biennially – will recognise recent excellent research, by up to three individuals, in the field of electromagnetic science.

The award will be presented to its winner(s) during a prize ceremony at the EPS Nanometa Conference, which is to be held, in Seefeld, on 3-6 January 2013. The prize will consist of an engraved glass medal, a certificate…

MPE 2013 launches museum exhibit design competition

A competition to design museum quality exhibits has been opened by Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013 [MPE2013]. The exhibits – which could be image, video, programme or physically based – will contribute to MPE 2013’s aim of showcasing the ways in which mathematics can be used to tackle worldwide problems.

The top three modules will be awarded respective cash prizes of 5,000, 3,000, and 2,000 USD. Winning exhibits will also be displayed both on the exhibition website and in special exhibitions…

2012 Kavli Prizes awarded

The winners of the 2012 Kavli Prizes – which are awarded in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience – have been announced. The awards – which include a total cash prize of 1 million dollars in each field – were presented by His Majesty King Harald V of Norway at a special ceremony held in Oslo on 4 September this year.

UK STFC launches new newsletter from CERN

The European Network for Light ion Hadron Therapy [ENLIGHT] has published a tenth anniversary newsletter. The anniversary publication – entitled Highlights – details the progress of the various European Union funded hadron therapy projects which have been launched under the ENLIGHT program.

Mathematical Physics & Science Policy meeting

A Joint Meeting on Mathematical Physics and Science Policy is being held in Craiova, Romania, on 19-22 September this year. Lead ions and protons colliding for first time in LHC

The LHC saw its first collisions of lead ions with protons on 13 September. The largest experiments – ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb – all recorded lead ion-proton collisions in this test, which precedes the main run planned for January-February next year.

Nominations open for Flerov Prize for nuclear physics

Nominations are now open for the 2013 G.N. Flerov Prize. The commendation is to be given to individuals in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of nuclear physics. The award – which is sponsored by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research [JINR] – was established in 1992 in memory of Georgy Nikolaevich Flerov, the Russian nuclear physicist after whom the 114th chemical element, Flerovium, and the JINR Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions – in which it was discovered – have been named. The prize will be presented on the occasion of Flerov’s 100th birthday anniversary on 2 March 2013…

PETRA III X-ray microscope reveals to record resolution

PETRA III is now the world’s most advanced X-ray microscope, with a record-breaking resolution of 10 nanometres. The light source – located at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron [DESY] – can see down to structures ten thousand times thinner than a human hair.
