Nominations are now open for the 2013 Herbert Walther Award, which is given in recognition of distinguished contributions to the fields of quantum optics and atomic physics, as well as leadership in the scientific community.

The award is named in honour of Herbert Walther, in commemoration of his innovations in the fields of quantum optics and atomic physics, and his contributions to the scientific community in general.

Nominators must be members of the Optical Society of America – nominees, however, need not be. The award will not be given posthumously.

Presented annually the award is given by the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft and the Optical Society of America, and is supported by Messe München International, Toptica Photonics AG and a number of individual contributors.

This year’s award will be presented during the CLEO Europe 2013 conference, which is being co-sponsored by the European Physical Society.
