The 1st EPS Young Minds Leadership Meeting took place at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland on 29-30 April.

The Young Minds Project was launched by the European Physical Society early in 2010, to promote the next generation of physicists in Europe by creating an environment where young physicists can assume an active role.

These young scientists – from undergraduates up to postdoctoral researchers – are encouraged to organize EPS Young Minds Sections that collaborate to develop scientific, networking and outreach activities. The project is open to all enthusiastic young researchers in Europe, who are sure to one day become part of the next generation of scientific leaders.

The meeting, which drew together about 30 Young Minds from the ten Local Sections1, represented a great opportunity for career building and networking. Each Local Section had the possibility to present their activities to the others – with such including, for example, seminar cycles; visit to international laboratories and industries; and networking events with other sections.

A number of guest speakers also attended the meeting: among these were Rachel Won, the Senior Editor of Nature Photonics, who spoke about scientific publishing; and Peter Loosen, the Vice-Director of the Fraunhofer-Institut für Lasertechnik ILT, who spoke about applied research.
