The International Year of Sound 2020 (IYS 2020) is an initiative of the International Commission for Acoustics (ICA) and is an outcome of UNESCO Resolution 39 C/59 2017 “The Importance of Sound in Today’s World: Promoting Best Practices”. The ICA is mobilising all its member organisations and supporters to arrange events during 2020 that meet the goals to:

  • Improve the public understanding of the wide application of sound in our daily life.
  • Highlight the importance of the use and benefits of sound while controlling the unwanted noise.
  • Raise understanding of those in society with hearing or speech impairment.
  • Promote the importance of protecting hearing – especially in the workplace and in recreational activities.

The ICA has the support of International Union of Pure and Applied Science (IUPAP) and the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) plus other major Unions of scientific and engineering bodies. It has the collaboration of La Semaine du Son which has been organising for many years a ‘week of sound’in France and other countries.

The launch of the International Year of Sound will be held at the Sorbonne, Paris on Friday 31 January 2020.

As well as the local national events, the opening in Paris will bring together a wide range of those working in sound from around the world and will include a cultural performance.  It will be the first viewing of the central ICA events including a short film on the importance of sound in our life, a sound installation to encourage interest in how sound works and a schools competition.

During 2020 there are a number of major international meetings with a focus on some aspect of sound and each of these will host an additional outreach activity. Regional, national and local events will take different styles as appropriate, including public lectures, public exhibitions, cultural events and special education programs.

All organisations related with any aspect of sound are encourage to host an event or undertaking and seek to post this on the IYS2020 website calendar.  Once this has been accepted the IYS2020 logo is provided for use on this activity.
