FISICA 2014 – Biennial meeting of the Portuguese Physical Society

The 19th National Conference on Physics and 24th Iberian Meeting for Teaching Physics – jointly named “FISICA 2014” – was held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 2-4 September 2014. This biennial meeting is organized by the Portuguese Physical Society [SPF] and attracts physicists, teachers and students from all over the country and from neighbouring Spain. The total number of participants was 250.
This year’s event was hosted and co-sponsored by the Instituto Superior Técnico, the science and engineering faculty of the University of Lisbon. The local organizing committee enlisted the assistance of a team of twenty physics…

Topical Research Meeting on Hybrid Quantum Systems

The IOP run a Topical Research Meeting once a year and the 2014 event will be held in Nottingham, UK, from 16 to 18 December.

This meeting will cover all aspects of hybrid quantum systems involving atoms, light and matter. It will link theory to experiment, ranging from fundamental physics to the development of new quantum device concepts and technologies. The invited speakers are leading researchers in hybrid quantum systems.

From 15-19 July 2013, most of the Spanish community of physicists will gather in Valencia, Spain, to attend the 34th Biannual Meeting of the Spanish Royal Society of Physics and the 23rd Iberian Meeting on Physics Education.

In addition to mini-symposia, plenary sessions and round tables will address some of the hottest issues in physics and technology, including the elusive Higgs boson, quantum computing, or the state of the art in renewable energies.

Summary of EPS ExCom Meeting, October 2012

At the end of October 2012, the European Physical Society’s Executive Committee met at the Ettore Majorana Scientific Centre in Erice, Italy, in parallel with the kick-off under the chairmanship of H. Wenninger. The common location allowed the ExCom to learn about ongoing work and future evolution of the TIG.

The very recent endorsement of the International Year of Light 2015 by UNESCO was, of course, one of the highlights of the agenda of the ExCom meeting…
