The Swiss Physical Society’s SPS-Communications are published three times per year. We report in Nr. 53 of November 2017 about the SPS annual meeting held in August 2017 in Geneva, a joint meeting with the Austrian Physical Society (ÖPG). We present, as special conference highlights, the extended abstracts of 11 plenary talks, including the actual news of the Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to the detection of gravitational waves. http://www.sps.ch/en/articles/plenary-talks/2017/

Further reports cover the new European XFEL, written by DESY director Helmut Dosch, and the state of art in Quantum Computing, explained by the SPS-board members from IBM Research in Rüschlikon near Zurich. Another highlight is the article of Martin C. E. Huber, the former EPS president, entitled ‘A Swiss physicist’s contributions to European science policy’.
