UNESCO proclaims May 16th as the International Day of Light

PARIS, 14 November 2017: The 39th Session of the UNESCO General Conference has today proclaimed the date of May 16th as the International Day of Light. The proclamation of this annual International Day will enable global appreciation of the central role that light and light-based technologies play in the lives of the citizens of the world in areas of science, technology, culture, education, and sustainable development.

UNESCO Executive Board supports annual International Day celebration as an enduring legacy of IYL2015

Following the highly successful International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015), the Executive Board of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has endorsed a proposal for an enduring follow-up in the form of an annual International Day of Light to be celebrated on 16 May every year from 2018.

The International Year of Light 2015 [IYL 2015] will foster the creativity all over the world. The students from the media field of the University of Offenburg, Germany, did not wait until 2015 to bring their skills and innovative ideas to promote light. Under the guidance of their professor Dan Curticapean, they designed dozens of posters for IYL 2015.
