€70 billion for Horizon 2020

After long negotiation between European Union leaders agreeing on the next seven year budget for the Union, the final figure of €70.2 billion has been agreed upon for the research programme Horizon 2020. Although this total is 23% more than allocated for the current framework programme FP7, the first instalment planned for 2014 of €8.8 billion is actually less than the allocated funding in 2013.

The Pathway to teaching science by inquiry

The Pathway project, financed under the 7th Framework Programme [FP7] is exploring new approaches to inquiry-based science education [IBSE]. Based on the examination of best practices in IBSE, Pathway aims to promote the effective widespread use of inquiry and problem based science teaching techniques in primary and secondary schools in Europe. Running from 2011 to the end of 2013, the project consortium – the European Physical Society included – organizes workshops and events all over Europe and develops guidelines and resources.

The European Commission has published 4 new calls for proposals under the Framework Programme 7 [FP7].

• ICT – EU Japan Coordinated Call on topics Optical or wireless communications, cybersecurity, extending the cloud paradigm to the Internet of Things, the Federation of testbeds: Control, tools and experiments, as well as green and content centric networks. ICAN launches newsletter

The International Coherent Amplification Network [ICAN] project has launched a newsletter. The first issue – published earlier this year – provides news and information on the ICAN project and its events.

ICAN aims to bring together the laser, fibre and high-energy physics communities, with the aim of collaborating on a novel laser concept: one which will use fibre lasers to produce high energy and repetition rate pulse sources.
