Dear Readers,

Communication is a vital cornerstone of any efficient organisation. The fact that the European Physical Society [EPS] has now – in addition to its traditional journal, Europhysics News [EPN] – a digital newsletter, e-EPS, is a sure sign that the EPS is both efficient and rooted in today’s digital world. In e-EPS, readers can find up-to-date news from the EPS and beyond, conference announcements and much more…

Dear Readers,

Since its creation, the European Physical Society [EPS] and its members have been at the forefront of physics research and international collaboration. Our reputation is built, first and foremost, on our credibility as physicists. While many EPS initiatives have spurred European, and international, activities and policy initiatives (such as WYP2005, EPL and EMSPS, to cite some examples) the EPS has remained an actor behind the scenes…

Dear Readers,

There has been plenty of breaking news in physics this month; from the Nobel Prize awarded to our American colleagues, Saul Perlmutter, Brian P. Schmidt and Adam G. Riess, for their discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe; to the intriguing results, obtained in Europe, on the velocity of muon-neutrinos.

The neutrino velocity has been measured with unprecedented precision in the OPERA experiment…

Dear Readers,

Good news for the EPS! This year the society has seen a sizeable increase in its membership, more so than in the past few years; with the numbers at 291, 220 and 407 new individual members (IMs) in 2009, 2010, and 2011 respectively. Note also that the 2011 additions have only been counted up to 24 June – thus, further recruitment in 2011 is, in principle, still possible. The total number of IMs today exceeds 3200…
