First ever winners of new Institute of Physics Technician Awards announced
The first ever IOP Technician Awards winners were announced in October. Five winners in four categories – secondary school; further education and higher education; business and/or facilities and team – are the first technicians to be recognised by the IOP.

“Accelerators: powering cutting-edge research” is a booklet, prepared by the Science and Technology Facilities Council in collaboration with the Institute of Physics and the Cockcroft Institute. It explains what a particle accelerator does and examines its many different uses, from medical treatments to environmental impact.

Topical Research Meeting on Hybrid Quantum Systems
The IOP run a Topical Research Meeting once a year and the 2014 event will be held in Nottingham, UK, from 16 to 18 December.
This meeting will cover all aspects of hybrid quantum systems involving atoms, light and matter. It will link theory to experiment, ranging from fundamental physics to the development of new quantum device concepts and technologies. The invited speakers are leading researchers in hybrid quantum systems.
