During the first week of April 2017, the associations MCDA, Migrations Co-developpement Alsace (1) and Liter of Light France (2), in close cooperation with the new EPS Young Minds Beni-Mellal section, replaced Kerosene lamps by solar lamp kits in families using this fossil energy lighting.

A group of 25 students was trained to transform the lamps that were then delivered to families. This action is the second step following the first project led in November 2016 during the COP22 conference on climate in Marrakech, when solar lamp kits were already installed in different villages.

The next project is to deliver a 3D printer and CNC machine (Computer Numerical Control) to start building a Fabrication Laboratory in the Faculty of Sciences of Beni-Mellal.

1. MCDA is an association created in 1995 by immigrants in the Alsace region of France, anxious for a better North-South solidarity development. The overall approach of MCDA is based on the mobilisation of immigrants of Moroccan origin and their Alsatian friends.

2. Liter of Light is a global, grassroots movement committed to providing affordable, sustainable solar light to people with limited or no access to electricity. Through a network of partnerships around the world, Liter of Light volunteers teach marginalised communities how to use recycled plastic bottles and locally sourced materials to illuminate their homes, businesses and streets. Liter of Light has installed more than 350,000 bottle lights in more than 15 countries and taught green skills to empower grassroots entrepreneurs at every spot. Liter of Light’s open source technology has been recognized by the UN and adopted for use in some UNHCR camps.
