Symposium “125th Anniversary of Georges Lemaître”

On the occasion of his 125th anniversary in 2019, the Swiss Physical Society and the Swiss Academy of Sciences SCNAT with its platform MAP organize a symposium on Georges E. Lemaître, the Belgian physicist, astronomer, and Roman Catholic priest, who is known as the father of the Big-Bang model of the Universe. The symposium will take place on 21st of November at the University of Bern.

The talks by international experts will feature the astrophysical context of his work, his main contribution to cosmology, and the philosophical consequences. The symposium takes place at the Kuppelsaal of the University of Bern and starts at 2 p.m.; it includes a little reception and an evening talk that connects Lemaître’s work to the International Year of the Periodic Table of Elements 2019.
