The next conference of the Condensed Matter Division of the EPS, CMD 27, will be held jointly with the Spring meeting of the Condensed Matter Section (SKM) of the German Physical Society DPG in Berlin, on March 11th – 16th, 2018.  For this special edition of CMD, marking the 50th anniversary of the EPS, we are expecting over 5,000 participants from all over Europe.

The conference will be organised by CMD, the Statistical Nonlinear Physics Division (SNP) of the EPS, and SKM. Its format will integrate the DPG formula of focussed sessions and symposia with the CMD mini colloquia.  CMD is soliciting proposals for focused sessions at CMD 27. Planning such a session is a unique opportunity to gather a wide community of researchers in a large, Europe-scale event, in a setting where all logistics are taken care of – organisers should only worry about the scientific programme – and make it as attractive as possible! Proposals may be sent directly to eps [dot] cmd [at] gmail [dot] com, and shall consist of a one-page description of the focused session topic, together with the names, affiliations, and contact addresses of the prospective organisers.

A few rules are to be observed:

- Each focused session proposal will be organised by at least one physicist active in Germany and at least one physicist active in another European country. There will be no more than 4 organisers. Among these, there will be no 2 organisers from the same laboratory / institution.

- The session topic will be sufficiently broad to be of interest to a wide audience, and sufficiently focused to be discussed by one of the CMD / SNP / SKM topical groups such as : Liquid Physics, Low Temperatures, Magnetism, Semiconductor physics, Soft Matter and Biophysics, Statistical Physics and Dynamics, Physics of Socio-economical Systems, Structure and Dynamics / Metal and Material Physics / Physics of Dielectric Solids, Surface Physics; Magnetism sessions will be coordinated by EMA;

- Organisers will be free to determine the session programme. There will be slots and support available for invited speakers. Details will follow.

- There will be long (30′) slots for introductory and invited talks, and short (15′) slots for contributed talks; It is our intention to have as many participants to speak as possible – especially young physicists - ;

- organisers are expected to attend the conference;

Proposals are expected to arrive at CMD / SNP no later than June 10th, 2017 (mail to eps [dot] cmd [at] gmail [dot] com), and will be reviewed by the CMD / SNP / SKM topical groups in plenary formation. Prospective organizers will be contacted hence on, in order to coordinate the definition of the conference programme. The process will be finalised in the autumn.
