Sometimes we are so busy working on tasks at hand that we forget to look backwards to see how much we have achieved. In a sense, this is exactly the way it should be, because looking forward keeps us focused on moving in new directions! But in this last editorial of 2014, it’s perhaps the right time to go through exactly what EPS has achieved concretely over the last 12 months.

The outstanding astrophysicist and prominent science communicator Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell DBE, FRS, FRSE, MRIA is the new President-elect of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE). The election follows a ballot of all RSE Fellows which saw an overwhelming response in favour of her nomination. She succeeds Sir John Arbuthnott MRIA, PRSE, since October.

On 2 occasions duringthe past year, the European Physical Society has had the opportunity to meet with Prof. Anne Glover, the former the Chief Science Adviser to the President of the European Commission. Our goal was not to promote a specific political agenda, but to ask how we could demonstrate and/or explain how physics contributes to policy objectives of the EC. Our discussions were fruitful, allowing us to better understand the role that the EPS could play in providing information to the EC for evidence based policy making.
