ICFA appoints Lyn Evans Linear Collider Director

Lyn Evans has been appointed as the Linear Collider Director, the International Committee for Future Accelerators [ICFA] announced late last month. Evans, the first to hold this position, will bring together the governance of two existing accelerator programs: the Compact Linear Collider [CLIC] and the International Linear Collider [ILC].

“The international particle physics community is fortunate to have Lyn at the helm of this new organization,” says Pier Oddone, ICFA chair and Fermilab Director. “He brings tremendous experience to the position, having led the construction of the Large Hadron Collider that is already exceeding performance expectations after only a short time in operation.”

The planned large-scale linear colliders would add to the discoveries made at the Large Hadron Collider, by colliding electrons and positrons to further study the nature of matter.

The International Linear Collider is being designed to collide particles at between 0.5 and 1 TeV, using cold superconducting structures to accelerate the particle beams. The program is led by the internationally overseen ILC Global Design Effort. The ILC will deliver its technical design report to ICFA next year.

The Compact Linear Collider would use a two-beam system to accelerate particles to between 0.5 and 3 TeV. The international project – currently in its conceptual design phase – was launched by CERN.

“This new structure for Linear Collider development is a strong signal of the globally integrated nature of particle physics,” says CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. “It is clear that any future energy-frontier facility will be a global project from the outset, and this is an important step on the way.”

The long-awaited discovery – an interview with Guido Tonelli

On 4 July this year – following the announcement of the new particle discovery from CERN - European Physical Society president Luisa Cifarelli interviewed Guido Tonelli, former spokesperson of CERN’s CMS Collaboration.

Hello, Guido.
With respect to today’s exciting announcement, how are you feeling?

It is very difficult for me to describe today’s emotions. For people that have been searching...
