The “Deep Ocean Cabled Observatories” workshop will be held at NIKHEF, in Amsterdam, on 24-25 May this year. The event will bring together marine scientists and astroparticle physicists to discuss the research potential of cabled observatories.

The first day of the workshop will focus on current research being undertaken in Canada, the Mediterranean and the United States; the second day, however, will concentrate on the future – looking at what answers cabled observatories might be able to uncover.

This event – which is being organised by the Astroparticle European Research Area [ASPERA] – is in anticipation of the construction of the first phase of KM3NeT, a cubic-kilometre sized neutrino detector which will be based in the Mediterranean Sea.

For more information, and registration, please visit the conference website. More information on cabled observatories can be found in the recent ASPERA report “From the Geosphere to the Cosmos”.

Lipid-Protein Interactions in Membranes

The “Lipid-Protein Interactions in Membranes: Implications for Health and Disease” thematic meeting of the Biophysical Society will be held at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad, India, on 1-5 November this year.

The meeting - which will take place against the backdrop of recent advances in membrane protein crystallography - aims to bring together leading experts in membrane research in order to develop new models for the function of membrane proteins and design better therapeutic strategies to combat diseases which relate to the malfunctioning...
