ALPHA takes measurement of antihydrogen atoms

The ALPHA collaboration at CERN has undertaken the first measurements of the antihydrogen spectrum, reported the journal Nature last week. This initial development may pave the way towards a better understanding of why our universe is matter-based.

EPS elections to be held during council at CERN

The next European Physical Society [EPS] council meeting will be held at CERN, Geneva, on 30-31 March this year. The council will see the gathering of around 100 delegates, representing member societies, individual members, associate institutions, divisions and groups.

European research pilots cloud computing resource

Leading IT providers have teamed up with three of Europe’s largest research centres this month to launch a new cloud computing system. CERN, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory and the European Space Agency will be the first to enjoy the processing power of the platform – which has been named “Helix Nebula – the Science Cloud” – for such activities as the search for the Higgs Boson, the study of geological disasters and unravelling the secrets of DNA.

A limited number of grants are available for European Physical Society [EPS] Individual Members to attend EPS Europhysics and sponsored conferences.

Those with an accepted oral or poster contribution to the conference are eligible. Grants are only available to Individual Members whose membership fee payments are up-to-date; only one grant will be awarded per person per year. 2012 marks the silver anniversary of the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students [ERASMUS], the European Union’s best known and most popular student exchange programme.
