Passion for Light, the Joint EPS-SIF International Workshop which will launch the idea of an International Year of Light (IYOL) in 2015, will take place on 16 September. For the first time with any EPS conference, proceedings will be simultaneously available in a webcast.

The live, streamed video of the event, direct from the beautiful venue of Villa Monastero – at Varenna, Lake Como, Italy – will be provided by the INFN CNAF service. The opening addresses and all the scientific lectures will thus be accessible on the day from the workshop webpage, where one can also find the final programme and the booklet of abstracts.

The opening addresses will be by:

L. Cifarelli, EPS-SIF President;
C. Molteni, the Mayor of Varenna;
J. Dudley, Chairman of the International Council of Quantum Electronics and the EPS Quantum Electronics and Optics Division Representative;
M. Scalet, Head of the Science Unit of the UNESCO Venice Office;
R. Kirby Harris, the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics Secretary General;
J. Niemela, Director of the UNESCO Optics Education Project and Head of ICTP Multidisciplinary Laboratory;
V. Valassi, President of the Lecco Chamber of Commerce;
R. Sirtori, President of the Villa Monastero Institution.

The next important step, for the EPS, concerning the IYOL declaration will be the 27th IUPAP General Assembly, which will be held in London on 31 October-4 November this year.
