Passion for Light, an international workshop being jointly organised by the European and Italian Physical Societies, is to be held on 16 September 2011 at the Villa Monastero, in Varenna, Lake Como, Italy.

The workshop will provide a framework in which to announce a new initiative of the EPS Quantum Electronics and Optics Division – which aims for a declaration of an International Year of Light, to be held in either 2014 or 2015, under the auspices of the United Nations.

The Committee on International Scientific Affairs of the American Physical Society has discussed this proposal and their Division of Laser Science has already endorsed it. The proposal will be submitted first to the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, and then to the United Nation’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Passion for Light will open the Varenna Fisica Festival: a two week celebration of physics – with a focus on light – in the Italian region of Lecco-Merate-Varenna.

More information, including the conference programme, is available on the Italian Physical Society website.
